A BRIEF INTRODUCTION OF THE Department of ChemiCAL and Materials Engineering in Hefei university

The Department of Chemistry and Materials Engineering (CME), one of the earliest departments in Hefei University, was founded in 1982. The department has been selected by Hefei University as a key department to cooperate with the Niedersachsen State in Germany in the higher-education area. Several readjustments have been done over the past 20 years. Many specialties were once established in the past 20 years such as environmental monitoring, chemical engineering & technology, refining chemical technology, food processing, plastic processing, and blood products. However, the Department offers three main specialties at the present: chemical engineering & technology, inorganic nonmetallic materials engineering, and powder materials engineering. The specialty of chemical engineering & technology was the earliest one in Hefei University. The Department of CME has three staff rooms: basic chemistry, chemical & materials engineering, and experimental technique.

There are more than 30 faculty members in the Department of Chemical Engineering, among them are 12 full-time professors and 2 outstanding teachers of Anhui province. Some outstanding professors in China have been invited as part-time professors from some famous universities and institutes. There are 21 teachers who have acquired the doctor's degree or the master's degree. In the past years, over 10 teachers were once sent to some universities in Germany, American, England, and Japan, for acquiring the advanced knowledge & technology and communicating with foreign scholars. The Department now has a research institute and three laboratories, namely “Institute of Applied Chemistry”, “Laboratory of Basic Chemistry”, “Laboratory of Engineering Foundation”, and “Laboratory of Professional Research”. There are 15 precise testing instruments and 20 large-scale professional research equipments.

The Department of CME insists that scientific research activities and teaching activities must become integrated. Equal emphasis is put on theoretical research and practical applications to improve the practical ability of its students. The department has received two Science & Technology Invention awards at twice international exhibition, three Science & Technology Progress awards at provincial level and one at local level. Several patents were patented. Research items the department presided or attended were respectively supported by National 863 Foundation, National 973 Foundation, National Natural Science Foundation, Especial Foundation of the Laboratory of Chinese Academy of Science, and Natural Science Foundation of Anhui Province. The department puts remarkable emphasis on communication with foreign universities and colleges, and acquires abundant experiences in management and teaching methods from some German universities and colleges. Some German professors have been invited by the department as honor-professors to improve the level of its discipline & specialty. In the past years, some excellent students have been picked out and sent to universities in Germany and Korea. The department has good cooperation with many enterprises guilds. All of these provide a good environment for the improvement of its research level and discipline structure.
